The fundus is the upper portion of the uterus between the fallopian tubes. Fundal height is a useful method of assessing fetal growth and development. A high fundal height may indicate twins, or it may indicate fetal growth problems. A low fundal height may indicate fetal growth problems such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
Your midwife will measure the distance from the top of your pubic bone to the top of your fundus with a tape measure to determine fundal height. Fundal height can vary from person to person - it is not an exact measurement. As you approach late pregnancy, fundal height will become a less accurate measure of fetal development.
